Day 22. Management has changed.

“You’re not the sweet girl I used to know.”

Oh, darling. I know.

That sweet girl was lovely, wasn’t she?

Always understanding. Always available. Always giving people the benefit of the doubt, even when there was no doubt left to benefit from.

She believed in second chances. And third chances. And fourth chances, because apparently she was running a charitable foundation for the emotionally incompetent.

She listened. She forgave. She made excuses for people who couldn’t even be bothered to invent convincing ones themselves.

And when someone needed something?

There she was.

A sort of emotional 7-Eleven. Open twenty-four hours a day, no appointment necessary, no questions asked, and apparently everything was free.

Unfortunately, the business model was unsustainable.

She went bankrupt financing other people’s egos.

So yes.

I’m a bitch now. A proper one, apparently.

Not because I’ve suddenly developed a passion for being unpleasant. Quite the opposite. I simply discovered that being endlessly pleasant was becoming terribly expensive.

The new management has reviewed the accounts.

All outstanding emotional debts have been written off. All complimentary services have been discontinued. The unlimited patience subscription has expired.

And the old policy of welcoming absolutely everybody into my life?

Withdrawn. Without notice.

Some people will call it selfishness.

Others will say I’ve changed.

A few will complain that I’m not as nice as I used to be.

They’re absolutely right.

The sweet girl has left the building.

And as for Little Miss Carochinha, who used to believe every charming little story?

Carochinha no longer lives here.

Please do not knock.

The new tenant has excellent boundaries, a very selective guest list and absolutely no intention of reopening the charity.

The 7-Eleven is now a private boutique. Admission by invitation only.

Same woman. New management. No refunds.

Apparently, at sixty, I'm supposed to calm down. Dress sensibly. Choose sensible shoes. Wear sensitive colors. And generally become a slightly quieter version of myself. That sounds exhausting. So I went to New York Fashion Week instead. Because if there's one place where nobody asks you to tone it down, behave yourself or dress your age, it's New York. Fuchsia. Ridiculous sunglasses. Trainers instead of heels. Coffee in one hand and absolutely no intention of becoming invisible. Perfect. I've never understood the expression “act your age.” Which part of sixty am I supposed to act? The part that has survived enough bullshit to stop caring what people think? The part that finally knows what she likes? Or the part that has enough shoes to know that sensitive ones are wildly overrated? Age doesn't make you boring. Giving up does. And I have absolutely no plans for that. So if you're looking for me, I'll be the sixty-year-old woman in fuchs...

  There comes a point in life when arguing with stupid becomes bad time management. Not because you’ve run out of arguments. Not because you couldn’t produce the receipts, the dates, the screenshots and a rather impressive PowerPoint presentation. They mistake arrogance for confidence, cruelty for strength, silence for victory, and their own version of events for internationally recognised fact. Adorable.
